Gorilla Troops
Gorillas live in stable family troops led by a single dominant silverback male, who protects the group and decides where it travels and feeds. Troops typically include several adult females and their offspring, with young males eventually leaving to establish their own groups.
Chimpanzee Communities
Chimpanzees live in larger, looser communities of dozens of individuals that split into smaller subgroups foraging separately during the day. Male chimpanzees form a strict dominance hierarchy through alliances and displays, while female chimpanzees often disperse to new communities upon reaching maturity.
Solitary Orangutans
Orangutans are far more solitary than other great apes, with adult males and females generally ranging alone except during mating or when females are raising young. This solitary pattern is thought to reflect the scattered, unpredictable fruit supply in their forest habitat, which makes group foraging less efficient.
