The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is the largest of the anteater species, reaching up to 7 feet long including its bushy tail. It is found across Central and South America in grassland, savanna, and open forest habitat.
Despite its bulk, the giant anteater is a capable defender, rearing up on its hind legs and swiping with its large front claws when threatened — a defense strong enough to deter jaguars and pumas in some encounters.
The species is classified as Vulnerable, with populations declining due to habitat loss, road mortality, and wildfires across parts of its South American range.
