Whale Gifts

Whale is the common name for various marine mammals of the order Cetacea. The term whale is sometimes used to refer to all cetaceans, but more often it excludes dolphins and porpoises, which are also cetaceans but belong to the suborder Odontoceti. This suborder also includes the sperm whale, killer whale, pilot whale, and beluga whale. The suborder Mysticeti (baleen whales), are filter feeders that feed on small organisms caught by straining seawater through a comblike structure found in the mouth called baleen. This suborder includes the blue whale, the humpback whale the bowhead whale and the minke whales. All Cetacea have forelimbs modified as fins, a tail with horizontal flukes, and nasal openings on top of the head.

Whale Senses

Every animal has their basic senses, its just in most cases an animals senses do different things than humans do thus is the same story for whale senses. A whale has the five senses that were all accustomed to, the sense of sight, smell, taste, touch and sound. However, the interesting thing is what these senses do for a whale.

When a whale is utilizing their site, there are a few things that are interesting about this sense. When a whale finds itself swimming under water its sight is heightened. In fact, whales can see up to 35 feet out in front of them when they are swimming underwater.

But, when a whale has emerged from the water they lose a lot of their great sense of sight. In fact, the whales can only predominantly see close because of the different change of scenery that they enter into.

There has been some misguiding information concerning the sense of smell that a whale has. There are some people that believe that whales can smell things to a limited extent, while there are other people that protest that whales cannot smell anything at all.

A whale has the ability to hear sounds that re-verb back to them at low frequency levels. The sounds are somewhat muffled when they hear them because they spend most of their lives swimming around underwater.

People have made speculations about a whales ability to taste. Some believe that just like the whales smell they cannot taste their food. This is not true, whales have taste buds, therefore they can taste their food.

The skin of a whale is very thin. This thin layer of skin enlightens the whales sense of touch. The blood vessels along with the nerves under a whales skin over stimulate this sense. Touching is the main way that whales choose to communicate amongst one another.
