Nine-banded armadillos almost always give birth to identical quadruplets, all developing from a single fertilized egg that splits into four — a reproductive pattern found in no other mammal.
Armadillos can hold their breath for several minutes, allowing them to cross small streams by walking along the bottom rather than swimming.
Despite their armored appearance, an armadillo’s shell is flexible in banded species, allowing some limited curling even in species that cannot form a full ball.
