Most armadillos are omnivorous but favor insects heavily, using their long snout and sticky tongue to dig up ants, termites, grubs, and other invertebrates from soil and rotting logs.
Some larger species will also eat small vertebrates, eggs, and carrion opportunistically, and many supplement their diet with fruit and fungi when available.
An armadillo’s strong sense of smell can detect insect larvae buried several inches underground, letting it dig with precision rather than searching at random.
